Lying in the midst of an otherwise bustling metropolis, GaudÃ’s masterful architecture lies at the heart of Barcelona. I must confess, I’m not quite sure how anyone can become acquainted with GaudÃ’s design aesthetic without visiting the Sagrada Familia church itself. Built after his death by disciples and patrons who were granted plenary powers over construction, they sought him out as their patron saint – ensuring that this remains one of the most revered sites in Catalonia.
The crypt of Santa Maria del Pi was originally constructed in 1279-80 under Bernard Gui during the reign of James I of Aragon before being expanded upon in subsequent ages; however, its latest incarnation is far more elaborate than any previous iteration.
1. Visit the Sagrada Familia
The piquant Gaudà stamp is all over Barcelona, and the best way to harness its influence is via architecture like Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia. This profoundly influential church awaits visitors with an invigorating design that brings to mind ancient temples while remaining wholly original in its alluring composition of layered polychrome stone work and curved lines; a fusion of styles based on art history which offers an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Inaugurated in 1882, construction has been proceeding on this colossal temple for six decades now. For all this time, it remains unfinished; however, recent progress has yielded some spectacular sights of late. Construction is still taking place at the site with heavy machinery and cranes lending scale to the project. The cathedral remains tantalizingly aloof from one side even though its façade is complete!
2. Explore Gaudi’s Parc Guell
Arguably, one of the most captivating sights in Barcelona is its sparkling Parc Guell. This luminous oasis within this urban setting is a haven of tranquility and serenity that beckons visitors to lay down under the shade of its sprawling trees while contemplating the architecture they behold around them.
The landscaping project by renowned architect Antoni Gaudi simply cannot be overstated; its magnitude was so vast that the sheer scale of it has yet to be completely ascertained. With an elevation of 2,300 feet above sea level, his masterwork is still considered to be among one of the highest parks in existence!
3. Take a stroll down Las Ramblas
One of Barcelona’s most iconic strolls, Las Ramblas affords visitors the opportunity to experience the laid-back nature of Barcelona life.
This is one of the world’s most frequented pedestrianised avenues; a bustling thoroughfare that meanders from Plaça de Catalunya in the north all the way down to the waterfront promenade of Barceloneta at its southernmost end.
On any given day, you’ll be guaranteed to encounter locals and tourists alike ambling along this captivating avenue. It is a lively hub for activity – bursting with street performances and live music as well as offering more casual dining options than any other locale you may visit!
